One of the most common situations encountered during cargo surveys involves discovering mold on bagged cargo when a container or cargo hold is opened. This is frequently seen with agricultural commodities, animal feed, powdered chemicals, fertilizers, and other products shipped in bags.<\/span><\/p>\n

The immediate reaction is often:<\/span><\/p>\n

“The cargo became moldy because water entered the container during the voyage.”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It is an understandable assumption.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, in marine cargo surveying, the presence of mold simply indicates that the cargo has been exposed to conditions favorable for fungal growth. It does not, by itself, prove that water entered during transportation or that the carrier is liable.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This is why professional surveyors base their conclusions on evidence\u2014not assumptions.<\/span><\/p>\n

One Observation, Multiple Possible Causes<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

A container carrying bagged raw materials is opened at the discharge port.<\/span><\/p>\n

Several bags are found with visible mold on their outer surfaces, while some bags also show signs of discoloration and caking.<\/span><\/p>\n

    What a Marine Surveyor Actually Investigates<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Rather than focusing solely on the mold itself, a surveyor examines the overall condition of the shipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Typical areas of investigation include:<\/span><\/p>\n

    • The distribution pattern of the mold\u2014whether it is localized or widespread.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • The condition of the bags, including signs of water staining, tearing, or mechanical damage.<\/span><\/li>\n

      Only by assessing these factors together can the true source of the moisture be determined.<\/span><\/p>\n

      One Small Detail Can Change the Entire Conclusion<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

      In one survey case, approximately forty bags located in the center of the container were found to be moldy, while the bags near the container doors remained completely unaffected.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Initially, the cargo owner alleged that the container had leaked during the voyage.<\/span><\/p>\n

      However, the investigation revealed that:<\/span><\/p>\n

      • No evidence of water ingress was found.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • The door seals remained intact.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • No water marks were present on the sidewalls or floor.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Clear signs of condensation were observed beneath the container roof.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • The affected bags were concentrated in an area where temperature fluctuations and limited air circulation had encouraged moisture condensation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Taken together, these findings were more consistent with container condensation (“container sweat”)<\/strong> than with external water entering the container.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Had the investigation relied solely on the mold, the cause would likely have been misidentified.<\/span><\/p>\n

            Mold on bagged cargo is a symptom<\/strong>, not a cause.<\/span><\/p>\n

            In marine cargo surveying, the surveyor’s responsibility is not simply to confirm that mold exists, but to determine where the moisture originated, when it developed, and how it led to the damage<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

            In every cargo claim, the observed condition tells us what is present.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
