“When the sun rises, I begin another survey.”
There are mornings when I stand before a calm sea, watching the sun emerge from the horizon, and ask myself why I continue to stay with marine surveying — a profession few truly understand, and even fewer choose.
Then I recall the moments that belong only to this profession: the distant echo of a ship’s horn, the yellow lights casting shadows on deck at midnight, the feeling of stepping onto a quay knowing that I am about to face a truth — about cargo, damage, or risks carried silently by the vessel.
Surveying is not always glamorous.
Sometimes it means standing through freezing sea winds at night to measure drafts;
sometimes climbing into dusty cargo holds with lingering chemical odors;
sometimes remaining calm amid intense disputes between parties — with a clear mind to state the truth.
We — marine surveyors — do not choose the easy path.
We choose responsibility.
Because every survey conclusion is a commitment — to transparency for the entire voyage, to the trust of shipowners, cargo interests, insurers… and sometimes to the livelihoods of hundreds of people behind the scenes.
Many ask, “Why stay in such a demanding job?”
I simply smile.
Because when you stand before the sea, at the moment where darkness meets light, you understand this:
Some professions are not chosen merely to make a living,
but to keep one’s integrity intact.
And I — a marine surveyor — continue to move forward, every day.
